The Night Time is the Right Time

A little while ago the infamous Night Owl put up some cards on his blog from teh 2009 OPC baseball set. I love this set and have been trying to complete it for sometime now. I casually inquired (read: BEGGED) for any help with completion that he may be able to offer.

Well wouldn't you know, N.O. had the last card I needed to complete the set.
Awesome. Owl also sent over one of the inserts I need as well. (I'm trying to complete all the insert sets also)
32 Yankees in the picture but somehow it's Jeter that is saluting the crowd. This just in... there are other Yankees on the ballclub... and more talented ones too.....  over rated has been...

Of course Owl felt guilty sending over a Phillie and a Yankee. Who wouldn't??? So he softened the blow by including a bunch of Braves and a few random hockey cards. (I'm Canadian, you know, eh?)

Mr Murphy from that new fangled Gypsy set all the kids are talking about....
 and his friend JHey.
Tommy Hanson about to unleash a fastball that is so fast it will strike you out. Last week. Before you even came to town.
An old Chipper!!! You know this sucker is gettting peeled.
A shiny of the best catcher in baseball. Odd how finally the sports "journalists" are now calling him that. I've been doing it for years.
And a gold Frenchie! I miss Jeff. I'm glad he's playing really well for the Chiefs. I mean Royals.
I now have the black, blue, and gold Frenchie's from that set. I only need the orange.

Among the random hockey cards was one of one of my all-time favourite players. Lyle Odelein.
I had the privilege of meeting Lyle a number of years ago. And it was a privilege. Lyle is one of those golly gee shucks kind of guys who is humbled and honoured that someone would even recognize him, let alone be a fan. Thanks for the beers Lyle.

And thanks to Night Owl for all of the cards, including those that I was waaay too lazy to scan. A return package is on the way to you.

It's been officially decided... and the winner is....

the voting is over. You the people have spoken. Although to be honest, some of you need professional help.
Our friend Night Owl needed a new Dodger Girl. And with the results of your voting, one has been chosen.

In third place, Audrina Patridge.
In second place, Shawn Johnson, seen here with her cousin. Apparently that side got all the height.
And the winner is........ Lauren Conrad. Although Owl himself may have influenced the voting early on. But it's his babe, not mine... so we'll let it slide.
Congrats Lauren There are no prizes, although if you contact Owl through his blog, I'm sure he'll buy you lunch to celebrate. I hope you like tacos.

Now for those of you still with me... I need to talk about the 8 of you that chose Kim Kardashian. This was a serious poll to help out a friend, and joke voting nearly threw the results out of whack.
And if you seriously voted for her.... seek help immediately. I can put you in touch with a counsellor if need be. You're sick. Sick and in need of help.

My friend, Mr Night Owl, is in trouble. Please help.

For those of you who read Night Owl's blog, and I think you all do... you know by now that he is in crisis. He is facing reality that he must take down the picture off of his blog of his beloved Alyssa Milano. Now me, I'm not that into her. But I ain't into the Dodgers either.
However none of that matters as Owl is my friend, and he needs help.
This is where we come in. I'll have a poll up on the sidebar to help Owl choose his new Dodger Girl. And you, the voters, will help decide.
Here are the potential candidates, in alphabetical order, so no favouritism.

Audrina Partridge, wearing number 59. Who wears 59 for the Dodgers? No idea. Ask the Owl.
I think Joe has cast his vote.
Kim Kardashian wearing number 25. Please god, no one choose her.... maybe for the Mets...
a benefit for Kim is you not only get her, but her whole family as well. Take that as a plus, or a minus.
Lauren Conrad wearing number 7. Very cute.  Leader of the pack so far....
Shawn Johnson wearing number 10. Now this one I know. Night Owl's favourite player wore number 10.
and it's Shawn Johnson. We all know what she can do. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge...
Victoria Beckham in a '70's warm up jacket. Very retro. And she's married to an athlete far more skilled than any baseball player. Owl may not want to hear that. So she may not do to well in the vote. But it is up to you!
Whitney Port wearing the old 00. Nice.
If it matters, her first pitch was actually a darn good throw. All of the others, not so much. So she gets the athletes vote.
There you have your finalists for Night Owl's new Dodger Girl. Google them if you must for further, uh.... research material. It's all in the name of science. And helping a friend.

Right?

Now vote!

Somebody wanted this card....

One of my Dodger buddies was lamenting the other day about this card not being issued. Either Night Owl or GCRL, I can't remember which now.....

but now here it is. Magic! OOoooooooo...........

Nocturnal interchange

a little while ago, I received packages from my two favourite Dodger collectors. One was a bipping that I still refuse to post. In fact, the cards are still in a pile in the furthest corner under my desk. The other, was from my good friend Night Owl. We will focus on his kindness today. And save the other for another.

First up, a mini card of Dale Murphy. Same size as a '75 mini.
next, a black border Kenshin from the '09 OPC set... which I've almost completed.
and a card of a pitcher that 29 other teams would love to have on their staff. I wonder how long before he replaces someone in the Braves rotation?
and I wonder when he'll learn how to wear a hat?

a shiny refractor of Jordan Schafer....
and the Ace of the staff. (see what I did there?)
a psychadelic Earl Williams.
Earl is so badass, he's about to take his All Star Rookie Trophy yard. It also looks like a submarine just surfaced behind him.
Now Greg knows I've been working on the '76 set for awhile now. He sent over a couple of gently loved cards for the cause.
I wonder if little Greg collected these way back when?
and a complete surprise, but one most welcome. Out of the '09 OPC baseball set, an insert set falling one per box.
I'm down to needing one for this set after the addition of young Henrik here. I love these cards.
I remember Greg posting this card for any takers, and I remember asking for it. But what I do not remember is the reason I really wanted it. There was one. But I can't remember.
Oh well, a card of the Expos broadcaster is always welcome.
These are some of my favourites from the stack I received. Thanks Mr Owl! A package was sent on it's way to you a few days ago. It was mostly '89 Topps. I hope that's okay. heh..........

I'm a little worried...

I received a package the other day from my nocturnal friend, the Night Owl. I sent him some random Dodgers as well as a card from his version of his "Most Wanted" list, and he returned the favour in kind.
Yes, Owl, favoUr.

First up, the Lemmer! He very well could be the next Governor of Georgia.
and my very first card of the Wonderful Terrific Monds. Name Hall of Fame right there.
a Chipper I didn't have... how did you know?
A brand new Topps ticket to crapdom of the sushinator, Kenshin Kawakami.
now the Chipper got me wondering, how did Owl know I needed THAT particular Chipper. But then it gets more intriguing.
Owl sent along a few '09 OPC cards I needed for my set.
He sent one of the '09 A&G I needed for my set.....
I know, I know. You think Night Owl just went HERE and checked out my wantlists and sent over what he could. Like a nice guy. Right? But Chipper isn't on any wantlist. And then there's this.
I only needed one card for my Braves team set from the 2000 eX set. I've been looking for months. No joy. Then Owl just happens to send Andruw. Set complete.
Coincidence?
No.
I know.
Owl's been going through my stuff.
At night.
When I'm not home.
I see the signs.
All of my xmas presents I had purchased early in october had been opened and rewrapped.
The shelf I keep all of my unopened wax has been jostled. I see the stains from his tears.
He knows what cards I need.
He also knows what cards to ask for... like he knows what's in my trade box.
I'm watching you N. O.
I'm onto you.

Another crossed off my list, and my first 2009 sighting...

Today's mail comes from Greg at Night Owl Cards. Greg was kind enough to send me a three card bonanza.
First, a card from my wantlist. A 2008 Allen & Ginter Jake Peavy. Nice. Only 11 more cards to go to complete this sucker.
Next, a 2008 Topps Gregor Blanco rookie.
and my very first 2009 card. Canada should be getting these around the May long weekend, so it was nice to see one in person.

Figures it had to be him. Well, Greg's heart was in the right place. If only John was.
Thanks Greg... as usual, I have some Dodgers saved (for you, and GCRL)... they'll go out soon.

Set completion via mail day!

A big thanks to reader Mike, who sent me the last three cards I needed to complete the 08/09 McDonalds Hockey set. Sliding that last card in the page is a great feeling, isn't it?
EDIT: Mike has started a blog, Addicted to Wax, check it out!

And Greg from Night Owl, sent over a tonne (okay, 7) Derek Lowe duplicates to officially start my Derek Lowe collection.
Thanks Greg!

up later tonight.... a football box break of 2006 Fleer Ultra Football. A couple of nice hits. (relax dayf, Matt Ryan isn't even in that set...)

Swap with Night Owl Cards

So awhile back I'm reading the blogs late at night like I often do... and what better blog to read at a time like that than Night Owl Cards? If you haven't checked it out yet, head on over. It's a good one.
Anyways... Greg was having a giveaway. 1993 Upper Deck. If it's free, it's me. I'm all in.
For the complete story, and box break, click here. Here's a mass scan of what was sent...
Yeah baby. That is Chipper Jonesyou see front and center. I sent off a pile of '91 Fleer Dodgers that he needed for his set. A big ole stack of yellow. What I didn't know, was that Greg snuck in a few random Braves to make it interesting.
I needed the '75 Foster and the '78 Paciorek! Sweeet! Thanks bud. I've started another pile to send to you. It'll take awhile, but it'll get there...
Up next on tomorrow's post.... Mystery Mailday! What's the mystery? Find out tomorrow.
